Building a writing habit

As this post by our experts at Better Humans states, here’s a step-by-step guide to building a writing habit:

  1. Write ten ideas each day. Block out a time of the day for yourself to do this. Set a reminder if necessary. Take a pen and paper and write ten ideas of any quality.
  2. Pick out one or two ideas from your daily list of ten that you believe have the most potential. Add subheadings, further points, or subplots and character traits (in case of fiction). Don’t worry about the structure or flow. Add the points as they come to you. Editing and formatting can be done later.
  3. Make writing a part of your routine. You can do this by setting a cue, craving, response, and finally rewarding yourself for sticking to your writing habit.

On days you can’t create

No matter how dedicated you are to your craft, there are bound to be days when you can’t find the energy to actually sit and write. On such days, it’s easy to get demotivated and start questioning whether or not you’re a “real writer.” I know. I’ve done the same.

On such days, here are some steps you can take:

  • Take a break and explore other platforms.
  • Read a book, watch a movie. Whatever you do — consume content mindfully. Try to reverse engineer the tricks of the content creator and apply them in your own writing.
  • Talk to friends, go out on a walk, cook a meal for yourself. In short, live life. This will fill your head with new ideas and the inspiration to start anew.

Bonus tips to keep up the streak

No matter how determined you are to build a daily writing habit, some days can be harder than the rest. On such days, don’t let yourself get lost in meaningless brutal self-recrimination. Alternatively, here are some things you can do on the days motivation feels low:

Get a habit tracker

Download a free habit tracker. This is a great way to keep yourself motivated. When you mark your progress on a calendar, the streak you see will be a great push to keep up the daily habit.

Get an accountability partner

Building a new habit can be a lonely process, but if you get an accountability partner, it doesn’t have to be so hard. Your accountability partner can be a friend who is trying to build the same habit as you. In case you can’t find a friend who is also working on the same habit as you, you can always hire an accountability coach.

Look through this Directory of Accountability Coaches to find a coach to suit your temperament and push you to be your best version.
