William H. Frist of Tennessee, the son of a physician and  educator, earned his bachelor’s degree Frist was elected to the United States Senate<\/a> in 1994 after working as a surgeon for 16 years, specializing in heart and lung transplants<\/a>. He was the first practicing physician to serve in that body since 1928.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Works<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During his time in the Senate<\/a>, he continued to participate in yearly medical missions to underprivileged nations<\/a>. Senator Frist was elected head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee<\/a> in 2000. Frist was chosen as the Senate Republican Conference’s floor leader two years later. As majority leader, he championed measures to combat HIV\/AIDS<\/a> across the world, improve Medicare<\/a> to include prescription medication coverage for seniors, lower taxes, and accomplish K-12 education reform<\/a>. In 2007, Majority Leader Frist announced his retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
