William H. Frist of Tennessee, the son of a physician and educator, earned his bachelor’s degree Frist was elected to the United States Senate<\/a> in 1994 after working as a surgeon for 16 years, specializing in heart and lung transplants<\/a>. As majority leader, he championed measures to combat HIV\/AIDS<\/a> across the world, improve Medicare<\/a> to include prescription medication coverage for seniors, lower taxes, and accomplish K-12 education reform<\/a>.
