6 Best Books on Habit Building https://blog.lift.do/6-best-books-on-habit-building/ Fri, 11 Jun 2021 11:30:50 +0000 https://blog.lift.do/?p=2235 Read ]]> Books you need to read today to build good habits and get rid of bad ones.

“All our life, so far as it has definite form, is but a mass of habits.” — William James

The things we do in life, the heights we achieve, the goals we accomplish — all of them are a culmination of habits. What we choose to do every day will determine what we will eventually accomplish. That’s why it’s so important to build good habits and get rid of bad ones.

This post lists six of the best books on habit-building that will help you build habits that stick. The writers are experts, and their insights will help you make better decisions every day and welcome lasting change in your life.

Note: The descriptions are taken from the book blurb on Goodreads.

1. The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg

In The Power of Habit, award-winning New York Times business reporter Charles Duhigg takes us to the thrilling edge of scientific discoveries that explain why habits exist and how they can be changed. With penetrating intelligence and an ability to distill vast amounts of information into engrossing narratives, Duhigg brings to life a whole new understanding of human nature and its potential for transformation.

Along the way we learn why some people and companies struggle to change, despite years of trying, while others seem to remake themselves overnight. We visit laboratories where neuroscientists explore how habits work and where, exactly, they reside in our brains. We discover how the right habits were crucial to the success of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, and civil-rights hero Martin Luther King, Jr. We go inside Procter & Gamble, Target superstores, Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church, NFL locker rooms, and the nation’s largest hospitals and see how implementing so-called keystone habits can earn billions and mean the difference between failure and success, life and death.

At its core, The Power of Habit contains an exhilarating argument: The key to exercising regularly, losing weight, raising exceptional children, becoming more productive, building revolutionary companies and social movements, and achieving success is understanding how habits work.

Habits aren’t destiny. As Charles Duhigg shows, by harnessing this new science, we can transform our businesses, our communities, and our lives.

2. Make It Stick by Peter C. Brown, Henry Roediger, Mark McDaniel

Many common study habits and practice routines turn out to be counterproductive. Underlining and highlighting, rereading, cramming, and single-minded repetition of new skills create the illusion of mastery, but gains fade quickly.

More complex and durable learning comes from self-testing, introducing certain difficulties in practice, waiting to re-study new material until a little forgetting has set in, and interleaving the practice of one skill or topic with another. Speaking most urgently to students, teachers, trainers, and athletes Make It Stick will appeal to all those interested in the challenge of lifelong learning and self-improvement.

3. Atomic Habits by James Clear

If you’re having trouble changing your habits, the problem isn’t you. The problem is your system. Bad habits repeat themselves again and again not because you don’t want to change, but because you have the wrong system for change. You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. Here, you’ll get a proven system that can take you to new heights.

Clear is known for his ability to distill complex topics into simple behaviors that can be easily applied to daily life and work. Here, he draws on the most proven ideas from biology, psychology, and neuroscience to create an easy-to-understand guide for making good habits inevitable and bad habits impossible. Along the way, readers will be inspired and entertained with true stories from Olympic gold medalists, award-winning artists, business leaders, life-saving physicians, and star comedians who have used the science of small habits to master their craft and vault to the top of their field.

4. 30 Days By Marc Reklau

In this simple, fast-paced book you will be learning what it takes to create the life you want.

30 Days is for people who are struggling, wanting to change their life, but they feel powerless and think change comes from the outside. They also keep doing the same things over and over expecting a different result, which Albert Einstein considered to be the purest form of insanity.

If you want to change your life, you have to change your habits and start doing small things differently every day.

Discover your enormous potential and…

 • Stop being a victim of the circumstances
 • Stop waiting for the miracle to happen and become one
 • Stop suffering and start creating the life you want
 • Improve your self-confidence
 • Improve your relationship with your spouse, colleagues, boss, etc.

30 Days is based on science, neuroscience, positive psychology, and real-life examples

5. Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg

The world’s leading expert on habit formation shows how you can have a happier, healthier life: by starting small.

When it comes to change, tiny is mighty. Start with two pushups a day, not a two-hour workout; or five deep breaths each morning rather than an hour of meditation. In Tiny Habits, B.J. Fogg brings his experience coaching more than 40,000 people to help you lose weight, de-stress, sleep better, or achieve any goal of your choice. You just need Fogg’s behavior formula: make it easy, make it fit your life, and make it rewarding. Whenever you get in your car, take one yoga breath. Smile. Whenever you get in bed, turn off your phone. Give yourself a high five.

Change can be easy — once it starts, it grows. Let B.J. Fogg show you exactly how.

6. Drive by Daniel Pink

Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money — the carrot-and-stick approach. That’s a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction at work, at school, and at home — is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.

Drawing on four decades of scientific research on human motivation, Pink exposes the mismatch between what science knows and what business does — and how that affects every aspect of life. He examines the three elements of true motivation — autonomy, mastery, and purpose — and offers smart and surprising techniques for putting these into action in a unique book that will change how we think and transform how we live.

“Change might not be fast and it isn’t always easy. But with time and effort, almost any habit can be reshaped.” — Charles Duhigg, The Power of Habit

How are the two books similar?

As the book blurb suggests, “At its core, The Power of Habit contains an exhilarating argument: The key to exercising regularly, losing weight, raising exceptional children, becoming more productive, building revolutionary companies and social movements, and achieving success is understanding how habits work.”

It has been widely loved by readers and reviewers alike. As Goodreads reviewer Robert Chapman writes, “The book flows really well and uses research throughout to substantiate the concepts presented. The audience who can benefit from this book is vast, from individuals to corporates to governments.

Tiny Habits, on the other hand, discusses Fogg’s behavior formula: make it easy, make it fit your life, and make it rewarding. Whenever you get in your car, take one yoga breath. Smile. Whenever you get in bed, turn off your phone. Give yourself a high five.

The book is an incredibly valuable source of frameworks to build habits that last. As Goodreads reviewer Ariane Cap writes, “A powerful and lifechanging method. Once I got the hang of how this works I felt unstoppable. I have been doing the method for years. I am very happy that the book on it is out now. Forget the copy cats. Go to the source, go to the science. This is the definite guide by the creator of the method. Highly recommended.”

How are the two books different?

Charles Duhigg’s The Power of Habit comes from the author’s extensive research after reading hundreds of scientific journals in the field of social psychology, clinical psychology, and neuroscience. Duhigg has also interviewed the scientists who wrote them and crafted his exhaustive thesis.

The result? The Power of Habit isn’t your average self-help book but takes a serious look at the science of habit formation and long-lasting change.

As for Tiny Habits, the bulk of the book comes from the research conducted by the author himself. BJ Fogg, PhD, is the founder and director of the Behavior Design Lab at Stanford University, where he has directed lab research for over 20 years. What you’ll find in Tiny Habits is a combination of Fogg’s academic research combined with his hands-on experience personally coaching over 40,000 people in the Tiny Habits method.

Two Best Books on Habit Building: Tiny Habits vs Atomic Habits https://blog.lift.do/two-best-books-on-habit-building-tiny-habits-vs-atomic-habits/ Sun, 30 May 2021 17:47:13 +0000 https://blog.lift.do/?p=2225 Read ]]> Insights from two leading researchers on building habits that last: dissected and reviewed.

Tiny Habits, written by BJ Fogg, goes with the tag line: The Small Changes That Change Everything. As the Goodreads blurb claims:

When it comes to change, tiny is mighty. Start with two pushups a day, not a two-hour workout; or five deep breaths each morning rather than an hour of meditation. In Tiny Habits, B.J. Fogg brings his experience coaching more than 40,000 people to help you lose weight, de-stress, sleep better, or achieve any goal of your choice. Whenever you get in bed, turn off your phone. Give yourself a high five.

Change can be easy — once it starts, it grows. Let B.J. Fogg show you exactly how.

Atomic Habits, on the other hand, is written by James Clear and goes with the tag line: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones. As the Goodreads blurb claims,

No matter your goals, Atomic Habits offers a proven framework for improving — every day.

Learn how to:

 • make time for new habits (even when life gets crazy)
 • overcome a lack of motivation and willpower
 • design your environment to make success easier
 • get back on track when you fall off course.

Atomic Habits will reshape the way you think about progress and success, and give you the tools and strategies you need to transform your habits — whether you are a team looking to win a championship, an organization hoping to redefine an industry, or simply an individual who wishes to quit smoking, lose weight, reduce stress or achieve any other goal.

How are the two books similar?

Both books cover about the same ground: how to build habits that stick.

Fogg discusses the B=MAP model of behavioral science which states behavior is the result of motivation, ability, and prompts taken at the same time. This is a simple formula that can lead to incredible results. In other words, a behavior is a result of:

 • Motivation, or your desire to execute the behavior.
 • Ability, i.e. your capacity to execute the behavior.
 • Prompt, or your cue to execute the behavior.

Atomic Habits, on the other hand, states that there are four elements to building habits that stick: cue, craving, response, and reward.

Cues are the first step in a chain of action and act as the trigger for a routine. The craving comes when you think of a reward and your mind and body will you into action. The response is the way you perform the habit, and the reward is what you give yourself to celebrate every small victory.

What makes the two books different?

The core idea of both the books is the same: real change isn’t instantaneous. It comes from the compound effect of several small decisions carried out over time.

However, the approach of the two books is a bit different.

Atomic Habits delves more into being motivational.

Tiny Habits, on the other hand, discusses more about the psychology of creating habits.

Coming straight from a pioneering research psychologist at Stanford, Tiny Habits is a series of actionable steps you can apply right away to embrace better habits. The author is a Silicon Valley legend, the founder of the iconic Behavior Design Lab at Stanford, and one of Fortune’s ‘10 New Gurus You Should Know.’ His expertise shines through in his work.

James Clear, touted as “one of the world’s leading experts on habit formation” also has done an amazing job of breaking down habit-building into multiple steps. As Goodreads reviewer, Lily C puts it, “This book lays out all the rules of changing/developing habits in a simple, straightforward way and gets right to the point without a bunch of rambling and seemingly unrelated filler chapters like some other self-development books I’ve read.”

So, what are you waiting for? Find a life coach to unlock the next level in your life today!

‘Tiny Habits’ by BJ Fogg Book Review https://blog.lift.do/tiny-habits-by-bj-fogg-book-review/ Sat, 22 May 2021 10:50:08 +0000 https://blog.lift.do/?p=2207 Read ]]> Why People Around The World Are Talking About This Book

Tiny Habit: The Small Changes That Change Everythingis a New York Times bestselling book by the world’s leading expert on habit formation, BJ Fogg. The book shows how you can have a happier, healthier life: by starting small.

As the blurb outlines, “When it comes to change, tiny is mighty. Start with two pushups a day, not a two-hour workout; or five deep breaths each morning rather than an hour of meditation. Whenever you get in bed, turn off your phone. Give yourself a high five.

Change can be easy — once it starts, it grows. Let B.J. Fogg show you exactly how.”

Here’s why this book has taken the world by storm.

“The vision of the future may be a few years away , but the good news is that we can start cultivating a culture of change right now.”

“The Fogg Behavior Model is a brilliant concept, and it deserves to be taught in primary school. In the first grade of primary school,” says reviewer Michal Stawicki from Poland. “Tiny Habits tells the whole story of habits, from underlying principles of repeating the behavior to breaking bad habits and group cooperation in developing new habits.”

“You just need Fogg’s behavior formula: make it easy, make it fit your life, and make it rewarding,” writes reviewer Maria Dismondy. “Whenever you get in your car, take one yoga breath. Smile. Whenever you get in bed, turn off your phone. Give yourself a high five.

According to readers Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, “The information in the book fascinating and eminently practical, especially the chapters on motivation and prompts. The author succeeds in reframing change as something to be embraced and celebrated. The 300 recipes for 15 life situations and challenges are worth the price of the entire book.”

Lynnette Simpson talks about this on LinkedIn, “The book is thorough and meant to be a step-by-step guide to help you craft new behaviors, stop unwanted behaviors, and influence others’ habits. The examples, stories, and exercises ensure that the reader has ample opportunities to digest and apply the principles of tiny habits.”

No wonder Tiny Habits has been touted as one of the most effective self-help books ever. As reviewer Tara McCoy writes, “Fogg combines these steps into a framework called a “Tiny Habit Recipe”. Use this to create a behavioral recipe for your desired habit. The basic format for a tiny habit recipe is: If (prompt), then I will (new tiny behavior). Then you celebrate. Don’t stress that your tiny habit is not the full, ideal version of the habit. Fogg reminds us that these “tiny habits” are simply habit seeds. Once we plant them by consistently doing the small version of the habit, the behavior is able to grow.”

Aside from these independent book reviewers, here’s what journalists, authors, and editors have to say about BJ Fogg’s Tiny Habits:

Fogg’s method has great potential to promote altered behavior in those who have sought help in other ventures with little success.” — Library Journal, starred review

“Myth-breaking and persuasive research . . . balancing useful practices (including many charts, tables, and graphs) with his own story of personal transformation, Fogg’s convincing method will help any reader reconfigure their habits.” — Publishers Weekly

“Deeply researched and highly practical, this book will be a valuable resource to anyone interested in changing their behavior (that is, all of us).” — Gretchen Rubin, New York Times best-selling author of The Happiness Project

“BJ Fogg’s ideas on self change are uniquely relevant, approachable, and powerful. I can’t recommend this book highly enough.” — Ramit Sethi, New York Times best-selling author of I Will Teach You to Be Rich

“BJ Fogg’s work is transformative . . . We use Tiny Habits at Amen Clinics with our patients, online students, and readers. It is simple, easy-to-implement, and it works.” — Daniel G. Amen, MD, New York Times best-selling author of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life

“[Tiny Habits] demystifies the little behaviors that add up to what is, in essence, our identity. Understanding these micro behaviors [is] critical if you want achieve big outcomes like losing weight or building a company.” — Tony Fadell, inventor of the iPod and coinventor of the iPhone

How to Read A Book For 30 Minutes Each Day https://blog.lift.do/how-to-read-a-book-for-30-minutes-each-day/ Sat, 03 Apr 2021 06:26:35 +0000 https://blog.lift.do/?p=2077 Read ]]> Reading is not just a hobby. Whether your read fiction or non-fiction, the glimpse into another person’s head is an enriching and fulfilling experience that multiplies your knowledge manifold.

It gives you new ideas and helps your store information better. When you read a lot of books, you can connect the new ideas with the older ones already stored in your brain and you can form connections that will expand your intellectual horizons.

That’s why reading is not simply a hobby. It’s a superpower. But even though we know how important it is to read books, we never manage to find time to fit in in our schedule. This post discusses some tips you can apply right now to read a book for thirty minutes each day without making any major changes to your schedule. Read on to know to build this amazing new habit that will result in rich dividends down the line.

1. Read before going to bed

A wonderful tactic to reduce your screentime as well as getting more reading done is to replace your phone with a book at bedtime. The next time you retire for the day, keep your phone in another room and take a book or an e-reader instead.

This way, you get some reading done before going to sleep and make sure that the time you would have otherwise spent mindlessly scrolling through social media is doing something productive.

2. Read after waking up

Another benefit of going to sleep with a book by your side is that you won’t have your phone at your bedside to check your notifications when you wake up the next day. Instead, you can pick up your book and start reading from where you last left the story.

Reading before starting your day is a great way to fill your mind with positivity and buzzing your consciousness with ideas.

4. Read while having meals

Practicing mindfulness while eating is great, but an effective way to get more reading done is to keep your e-reader propper up in front of you while having a meal. While this isn’t a great strategy if you share your mealtimes with family or friends, but can be a great way to dispel the loneliness and get the most out of your meal times if you live alone.

I’d have suggested keeping a book open while you eat, but turning the pages is hard with one hand, especially if you’re reading a paperback. And thus, having an e-reader solved the problem.

5. Set a reading goal

Websites like Goodreads are a great way to challenge yourself to read a fixed number of books each year. They have the option where you can set a reading goal each year and mark your progress as you complete each book.

Since Goodreads is a form of social media for book lovers, it’s also a great way to hold yourself accountable and meet fellow book-lover friends.

6. Track your reading habit

This is slightly different from the previous step. While in the previous step, you mark off each book you finish as you inch towards completing your reading goal; here, you congratulate yourself for sticking to your reading habit each day of the week. The former focuses on reading more books while the current one is focused on building a reading habit.

You can download a habit tracker and start marking how many pages you read each day. This will help you feel accomplished for small achievements and serve as an invaluable tool towards keeping you more accountable for your reading goals.

When you’re occupied in tasks that don’t demand much mental space and energy, listen to an audiobook. This is a brilliant idea to make sure your mood stays upbeat while completing a chore you hate while also getting some reading done.

If you feel audiobooks aren’t your thing, many audiobook services provide a free 30-day trial. You can create an account, sign up for a free trial, and start listening to your favorite books today.

5. Join a book club

An in-person book club is a great way to read more books. However, if our city is in lockdown or you’re unable to step out of the house for whatever reasons, you can join an online book club.

Most book clubs have a simple agenda — they assign a specific book each month and have timely discussions based on various chapters and characters. This is a great way to reiterate what you’ve learned while at the same time finding other book lovers to befriend and bond with.
